Just today, five people were sent to the hospital in Janesville for having high levels of carbon monoxide in their systems. Alliant Energy said a malfunctioning furnace caused the carbon monoxide release. The family did not have a carbon monoxide detector in their home.

This is timely with the new Wisconsin law that goes into effect February 1st requiring homes to install carbon monoxide detectors.

This new state law requires carbon monoxide alarms in all single family and two-unit homes, with an alarm on every floor level, and near sleeping areas. Existing homes may install any type of CO alarms; battery, plug-in, or combination smoke/CO devices. Alarms in newly constructed homes must be hard-wired with a battery back-up.

Exceptions to the law:

  • CO alarms are only required in new and existing homes that have any fuel burning appliance including:
    • stoves
    • ovens
    • grills
    • clothes dryers
    • furnaces
    • boilers
    • water heaters
    • fireplaces and heaters
    • OR an attached garage
  • Alarms do not need to be installed in the attic, garage or storage areas.

CO alarms require little maintenance, but you should:

  • Test alarms monthly
  • Replace alarms according to manufacturer instructions
  • Check batteries and replace twice a year
  • Replace the alarm every 5 years
