On June 1st, 2010 it became mandatory that all Wisconsin drivers carry proof of auto insurance in their vehicles at all times.

The Wisconsin State patrol is giving uninsured drivers warnings for the first 90 days.  After that they will enforce the law and fine drivers $10.00 for not having proof of insurance in the vehicle, a $200-$500 fine for not having insurance and a $767-$5,000 fine for false or fraudulent documentations.

The Wisconsin State Patrol cannot stop vehicles solely to check for insurance.  A driver has to appear in court to contest any citation.

Below are the exact guidelines and citation amounts:

  1. No Insurance: $200.50 (Could be up to $500 per the court)
  2. Has Insurance, but no proof is shown at the time of the stop: $10
  3. Presents false or fraudulent documents: $767.50 (Could be up to $5,000 per the court)
