The National Insurance Crime Bureau has determined the vehicle make, model and year most reported stolen in 2010. Did your car make the list? Most Stolen Vehicles in the US in 2010
Why would thieves target older cars? The NICB says that certain models of older cars and trucks are popular because of the value of their parts. Newer, more expensive and insured vehicles are often stolen to be resold intact with counterfeit VIN’s or shipped out of the U.S. Overall, vehicle thefts are on the decline. Preliminary FBI crime statistics for 2010 are down 7.2% from 2009. If these stats hold through the year, 2010 will post the fewest vehicle thefts since 1967. Improved technology is one reason for lower theft rates. Nearly 52,000 Honda Accords were stolen in 2010 and over 44,000 were models made in the 1990s. Does insurance protect me if my car is stolen? To be covered for theft, you must carry comprehensive coverage on your auto policy. Comprehensive coverage covers damage caused to your vehicle by an “act of God”, such as fire, theft, vandalism, hail, etc. Your insurance company may deny your claim if you do not take reasonable care to secure your vehicle or if you don’t report the theft to law enforcement right away. What if something is stolen from my car? Property theft is NOT covered under most car insurance policies. “Theft” under the comprehensive coverage of your auto policy refers to theft of the vehicle. Items stolen from your car are generally covered under your homeowners or renters policy. Check your coverage details to make sure you’re covered. Minimize the Chances of Your Car Being Stolen
