Over the last few years, the price paid for scrap metal has risen dramatically. This rising cost has led to an increase in theft of metals such as copper, brass and aluminum.

Thieves are taking copper from outside air conditioning units, electrical cables, gutters and downspouts, plumbing pipes and overheard power lines. They then make quick money by selling these items to scrap yards.

In response to the increase in stolen metals, many states have enacted laws making it more difficult to sell the scraps. These laws require proof of identification and vehicle registration information from the seller. Payment is made by check rather than cash and is mailed to the seller’s residence or business.

Here are some tips to prevent metal theft:

  • Hire a security guard to be on-site during unoccupied times.
  • Install intrusion detection alarms that are transmitted to central stations or police departments.
  • Make vacant properties look occupied. Keep landscaping cared for and sidewalks and driveways shoveled.
  • Have automatic timers on indoor lights and motion detector lights on the outside. Inspect lighting often to make sure it works.
  • Consider using traceable microchip identifiers that are adhered to wires, pipes or machinery.
  • Post signs or decals indicating that equipment or premises is protected. This may deter thieves from attacking the location.
  • When metal products are delivered to the site, it should be coordinated with delivery so goods are not stored unnecessarily.
  • Security cameras should be installed so they cover all areas of the facility, especially the yard areas.
  • The yard area should be arranged so it’s difficult to get a vehicle near the stored metals.
  • Deny thieves access to roof-mounted equipment by removing exterior fixed ladders.
