New Home Inventory App for Android Users Print E-mail

Earlier this year, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) released a home inventory app for iPhone users. Now, there's an app for Android users too!

Like the iPhone app, the Android version allows users to create a home inventory to ensure their possessions are fully protected. The free app lets users photograph images, descriptions, bar codes and serial numbers. It then organizes the information room by room and even creates a back-up file for e-mail sharing. A home inventory is great for determining how much insurance you really need and is useful when filing a claim.

There have also been changes to the iPhone app. It is now easier to manage photos and users can create an archive through a PDF or e-book of their home inventory.

To download the myHome Scr.APP.book app for free, visit the iTunes App Store or the Android Marketplace. Search 'NAIC' or 'Scr.APP.book' at either site to download. You can also print a simple home inventory checklist here.

What should I include in my home inventory?

  • jewelry and fine art
  • family heirlooms
  • collections
  • furniture
  • everyday leisure items: flat-screen TV’s, guitars
  • commonplace items: toys, CDs, clothing
  • occasional use items: holiday decorations, sports equipment, tools, landscape art, swing sets

Tips to Complete a Home Inventory

  1. Attach copies of original receipts and/or appraisal. Be sure to note model and serial numbers.
  2. Group your possessions into logical categories, i.e., by room in your home.
  3. Take pictures or videotape each item and document a brief description including age, purchase price and estimated current value.
  4. Store your home inventory and related documents in a safe, easily accessible place such as a safe deposit box.
  5. Review and update your inventory annually and whenever you make a significant purchase.
