According to the League of American Cyclists, about 60-90 million people in the United States bike regularly for recreation and exercise. If you’re one of those people, you may be surprised by these facts.

  • There is not an insurance policy for bicycles that is equivalent to an auto insurance policy. This means you have to piece together coverage from other policies for protection.
    • Theft or vandalism: the Personal Property coverage under your homeowners or renters’ insurance policy may cover you.
    • Damage you cause to someone or their property while biking: Your homeowners’ or renters’ policies may provide liability protection for harm you cause to someone else or their property (up to policy limits).
    • If you’re hit by a car: that driver’s liability portion of their auto insurance policy may cover the loss.
  • What if that driver doesn't have car insurance? Or what if they don’t have adequate insurance?

Here’s the catch:

You must have a car to purchase UM/UIM coverage. If you don’t have a car, UM/UIM is not available.

Our advice to you:

  • Purchase high limits of UM/UIM coverage. For the amount of protection it provides, UM/UIM coverage is relatively inexpensive. Contact us for an auto insurance quote.
  • It’s a good idea to consider umbrella insurance (see video below). An umbrella policy kicks in when you reach the limit on the underlying liability coverage in a homeowners, renters, condo or auto policy.
