Summer heat can be more than uncomfortable; it can be a threat to your health, especially for older adults and children.  Whatever your age, don’t let the summer heat get the best of you.  To beat the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water before you get thirsty.  The average adult needs eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, and even more during hot weather.
  • Wear lightweight clothing of natural fabric and a well-ventilated hat.
  • Eat smaller meals before work activity.
  • Ask your doctor if the heat will aggravate your body because of any medications you’re taking and take proper precautions.
  • Be aware that equipment such as respirators or work suits can increase heat stress..
  • Don’t forget to use sunscreen of at least SPF 15, which blocks out 92% of harmful UV rays.

Do you know the warning signs of Dehydration?

You can lose up to 10 cups of water a day by sweating, breathing and going to the bathroom.  Along with water, you also lose electrolytes, which are vital because they help maintain the balance of fluids in the body.   To combat heat-related illnesses, re-hydrate immediately.

In warm weather, skip the soda or coffee and go straight for H2O!
